- This experiment was conducted according to 4 x 4 latin square design with four Montafon lactating cows to determine the effects of untreated wheat straw (NS), straw treated with urea (ÜMS), alfalfa hay (KY) and maize silage (MS) on milk yield and composition. Each experimental period consisted of a 21- day transition and a 7 - day comparison period. Milk yield and composition were determined in comparison periods.

Crude fibre from roughages was 15 % of the total dry matter in each group.

Daily dry matter intakes were 13.00: 13.00; 12.90 and 12.90 kg for NS, ÜMS, KY and MS groups, respectively.

Milk yields for the rations were found to be 10.40 kg (NS), 9.73 kg (ÜMS), 10.64 kg (KY) and 9.30 kg (MS). Milk yield in the groups of MS was significantly lower than NS and KY groups (P 0.05). No treatment effects were observed on fat corrected milk, milk fat, solids-not fat, milk protein and lactose.

Asa result, the quality of the roughages were not so important when energy and nutrients requirements of lactating cows were exactly balanced in the rations. The treatment of straw with urea had not positive effect on milk yield. Keywords :
