Studies on the wool characteristics of Ile de France x Akkaraman

Kamuran ÖZNACAR

- The aim this study was to determine the some wool characteristics of Ile de France x Akkaraman cross-breds and purebreds sheep at Ereğli Animal Breeding Research Station. The wool samples were taken from yearling of shoulder, rib thigh region for F1 (83), F2 (32), G1 (32) crossbreds and hip region for prebred in 1970 – 1971. The wool characteristics of the Staple length, the fibre diameter, the breaking strenght, the elasticity, the numbers of wool follicle and percentage of clean fibre content were determined by laboratory analysis.

Avarage values for F1, F2, G1 Ile de France and Akkaraman yearlings were: 9.93, 9.78, 8.50, 8.83 and 8.63 cm for the staple length; 24.08, 24.70, 22.70, 23.20 and 23.39 microns for the fibre diameter; 3.39, 4.15, 0.30 and 3.91 % for the percentage of medullated fibre; 2.21, 2.64, 0.30,0.0 and 0.54 for the percentage of kampy fibre; 10.22, 9.52, 9.99, 9.10 gr for the breaking strength; 26.87, 28.11, 21.40, 26.48 and 27.72 % for the elasticity, 59.38, 57.49, 54.03, 46.40 and 57.78 % for the percentage of clean fibre respectively.

Crossbreds groups had more secondary follicles number than Akkaraman group. The results that indicate then the crossbred wool is suitable for warsted manufacturing. Keywords :
