Studies on Cattle Artificial Insemination in Turkey
Total numbers of inseminated cows and birth rates achieved in 1949 and 1963 were 714-86.227 and 69.0-62.4 %, respectively. 106.673 cows were inseminated in 1964. This number represents 1.18 % of all cows and heifers in the A.I. operated regions. There has been a steady increase in number of cows inseminated each year since 1949. On the other hand, the number of cows inseminated in 1964 is relatively, too small when compared with total number of cows and heifers in the related regions.
In 1964 there were 129 A.I. stations which 45 of them had bulls and, supplied the necessary semen for the entire inseminations carried in Turkey. According to our studies, under the existing conditions, semen could be provided for the entire A.I. program through 19 semen production stations by making adequate, minor adjustments in the A.I. program.
The Turkish A.I. program is entirely organized and supported by the state. The breeders are not charged for the insemination service extended to them. The service is carried through A.I. section in the General Veterinary Directorate of Minstry of Agriculture.
