- This study has been carried out to get information on the wool characteristics of fat tailed Akkaraman breed of sheep, and to determine the suitability of Akkaraman wool for different purpose. 100 adult animals from each of the five Akkaraman breeding provinces were sampled. From each animal, wool samples were taken from shoulder, rib and thigh areas just before shearing. Different wool characteristics were determined with laboratory analyses. In one province body weight and greasy fleece weight were also recorded on 300 sheep.

Average values for Sivas, Kangal, Niğde, Konya and Ankara provinces and for all provinces were; 10.1, 6.9, 8.9, 9.0, 9.1 and 8.8 cm. for staple length; 35.0, 31.6, 29.9, 29.7, 30.6 and 31.4 microns for fiber diameter; 27.0, 21.1, 19.2, 18.7, 22.9 and 21.8 % for medullation (kempy, medullated and heterotype fiber); 21.3, 18.3, 15.1, 16.2, 17.8 and 17.7 gr for tensile strength; 25.8, 24.3, 24.0, 27.3, 25.0 and 25.3 % for elasticity; 4.4, 3.2, 4.4, 5.4, 5.0 and 4.5 % for wool grease respectively. Average greasy fleece weight and body weight at shearing in Kangal region were 2.12 kg and 48.7 kg.

The results indicate that the Akkaraman wool is most suited to carpet manufacturing, but it can be improved by selection and crossbreeding with fine-wool breeds for use in Textile Industry. Keywords :
