- The objectives of this study were to determine the nutritive value, metabolizable energy and differences between periods of sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa L.) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.) in Kars. Samples were collected from five different planting locations in June and July. Dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were analysed. Also nitrogen free extract matter (NFEM) and metabolizable energy (ME) were determined. There was a variation in contents OM, CP, CF, CA, NDF, ADF and ME of sainfoin and CP, EE and ME of vetch between the months of June and July (P<0.05). Significantly increased the level of OM, CF, NDF and ADF of sainfoin (P<0.05). Concentrations of CP and ME of sainfoin and vetch decreased (P<0.05). As a result, the nutrient levels in forage crop varies in different harvesting time, and to determine the best harvesting time concluded that nutrient levels should be taken into account.
