1 Şap Enstitüsü Müdürlüğü, Çankaya - Ankara - The acute phase response is a complex systemic early defense system activated by trauma, infection, stress, neoplasia and inflammation. Although nonspecific, it serves as a core of the innate immune response involving physical and molecular barriers and responses that serve to prevent infection, clear potential pathogens, initiate inflammatory processes and contribute to resolution and the healing process. Acute phase proteins have been a focus of many applications in human diagnostic medicine and recently have been identied in common animal species. Potential applications to diagnosis, prognosis, assessment of animal health and laboratory animal welfare acute phase proteins such as haptoglobin, serum amyloid A and fibrinogen are plasma proteins which increase in concentration following infection, inflammation or trauma. Investigations have shown that the quantification of their concentration in plasma or serum can provide valuable diagnostic information in the detection, prognosis and monitoring of disease. Species differences in the acute phase protein response profile mean that each species should be examined individually and that immunoassays for the proteins should be carefully validated before use. Future prospects for investigation of the acute phase proteins for animals include assessment of the affects of association between subclinical levels of the proteins and chronic diseases.
