Studies on the Wool Characteristics of Ile de France Sheep at the Konya Ereğli State Farm

Faruk İMERYÜZ ,Şefik MÜFTÜOĞLU

- The aim this study was to determine the some wool characteristics of Ile de France sheep at Ereğli Animal Breeding Research Station in Central Anatolia. The wool samples were taken from hip region just before shearing in 1966 - 1970. The wool characteristics of the staple length, the fiber and the percentage of clean fiber were determined by laboratory analyses. There were no yearlings in 1966.

Average values of the staple length for rams, ewes and yearlings were: 7.6 , 7,1 cm in 1966, 8.3, 7.3, 7.9 cm in 1967, 7.5, 6.2, 7.5 cm in 1968, 7.9, 7.3, 10.6 cm in 1969 and 7.6, 6.6, 9.4 cm in 1970, respectively. The lengt of yearlings were statistically significant longer than others. The wool length was getting shorter after 5 years old.

Average values of the fiber diameter for rams, ewes yearlings were: 29.6, 28.6 microns in 1966, 31.2, 29.4, 27.7 microns in 1967, 30.9, 26.7, 24.7 microns in 1968, 26.2, 25.8, 22.6 microns in 1969, 26.8, 25.1, 24.5 microns in 1970, respectively. The fineness of yearlings were the finest all of them. All groups have given coarse fiber in 1966-1967 because of the new environmental condition.

Average values of the breaking stregth and elasticity for rams, ewes yearlings were 14.4 gr and 20.7 %, 13.8 gr and 20.2 % in 1966, 16.8 gr and 24.6 %, 12.3 gr and 29.7 %, 12.5 gr and 21.8 % in 1967, 13.5 gr and 32.4 %, 11.5 gr and 33.2 %, 8.5 gr and 35.7 % in 1968, 11.2 gr and 33.4 %, 10.8 gr and 36.6 %, 9.8 gr and 26.8 % in 1969, 10.6 gr and 33.0 %, 10.4 gr and 30.6 %, 10.0 gr and 29.8 % in 1970 respectively. The breaking strength and elasticity have shown differences depends on fiber diameter between years. The amount of kempy, medullated and heterotype fibers were un important.

Average value of the percentage of clean fiber for rams, ewes, yearlings were; 51.95, 48.72 % ind 1966, 51.87, 57.11, 58.24 % in 1967, 52.96, 50.85, 48.91 % in 1968, 53.54, 46.94, 44.80 % in 1969, 45.85, 48.28, 46.40 % in 1970 respectively. The results indicate that Ile de France Wool is also suitable for warsted manufacturing. Keywords :
