- The object of this study was to determine some characteristics of basic rough (Raw) wool and subordinate rough wool classes according to the regulation governing the control of wool exports.

Wool samples of each basic raw wool varieties (except Karakaya Wool) have been taken from different storehouses which belong to wool exporters in Istanbul in two years (1964-1965). And also wool samples of colored Thracian clored Anatolian, colored eastern, piece Anatolian have been taken from subordinate rough wool classe.

The percentage of clean fiber content determined by ASTM, standart condition; a moisture content of 12 % alcohol-extractable matter content of 1.5 % and ash content of 0.5 %. The mean values given for yield in all taken samples on the Table No: IV.

Fiber diameters are determined by Wedge-Scale method and the mean values given on the Table No: I; also distribution of fiber fenennes on the Table II.

The breaking strength and fiber elasticity of all samples determined by Schopper, and the mean values given on the Table No; VI.

The staple length of raw samples was measured by ruler. The results are given on the Table No: III. It is necessary to establishe a new scientific classification of wool in order to increase carpet type wool export. Keywords :
