Reproductive Traits of Domestic Female Buffaloes

- The buffalo population (Bubalus bubalis) of the world is 150 millions approximately. According to Institute of State Statistics Turkey has 176 000 buffaloes, and this population decreases from year to year. Buffalo milk and meat have low fat and cholesterol. In addition, these animal are more resistant to some diseases than the cattle. They are also content with inadequate feeding, and have ability to convert the insufficient roughages to meat and milk.

Although the reproductive traits of buffaloes are similar to those of cattle, there are some differences between them. Pubertas age, gestation period, first calving age, calving interval, uterine involution, pospartum first oestrus, pospartum pregnancy (service period) of buffaloes are 17-24 months, 305-340 days, 30-56 months, 340-700 days, 15-60 days, 35-275 days, 40-400 days, respectively.
