- The purpose of this study was to evaluate growth viability, fertility and milk production characteristics of Brown Swiss x Native Gray third upgrades (G3, 15/16 BS – 1/16 NG) and offspring of second upgrades (G2, 7/8 BS – 1/8 NG) in order to decide on the optimum producing level to close the herd.

Purebred Brown Swiss animals were used as controls. All the animals were contamporaries. Growth measures were found the same for all breeding groups. Average birth weight was 41 kg. in males and 38 kg in females, weaning wight was 134.7 kg for all groups.

Crosbred calves showed higher viability than purebreds. Mortality in 6 months was 5.6 % in crosses and 10.5 % in purebreds.

G2 cows were more fertilite than BS cows. Conception rate was 92.1 % and 83.4 %.

No difference was found for milk yield, the average production was 2393 kg for all groups. Keywords :
