A study on heritability of the curl forms, lustre ability and the birth weight of the Karakul Lambs at Çifteler Study Farm

Halil ÖZCAN

- At Çifteler Study Farm, the records of the most important fur characters (curl forms and lustre ability) and birth weight from 300 Karakul lambs and their 300 dams and 5 sires were used.

The Karakuls had the highest heritability in curl forms 0.2339 ± 0.1035. The heritability estimates were resulted 0.1634 ± 0.1000 for lustre ability and 0.2146 ± 0.1166 for birth weight. These findings are close to those started in most references.

The results show that Progeny Testing may be more eseful for the Karakul bereeding at Çifteler Study Farm than today`s selection system depending on only phenotype of sires and dams. Keywords :
