1 Lalahan Hayvancılık Merkez Araştırma Enstitüsü- ANKARA - Techniques for producing bovine preimplantation embryos by in vitro maturation/ in vitro fertilization (IVM/IVF) are being used in many laboratories world wide. There has been a great development in biotechnology recent years. These new methods enable us to obtain oocytes from breedingstock for long years. Therefore these biotechnological methods increase animal productivity and benefit for the economy.

Viable embryos can be produced from ovarian oocytes collected hours after death of animals at the slaughterhouse. By using this technique, oocytes are in vitro matured and fertilized, stored by freezing and embryos suitable for non-surgical transfer can be produced inexpensively in large numbers. Moreover, IVM/IVF embryos can provide the starting materials for nuclear transfer and other approaches for manipulation of genome.
