- The purpose of this study was to investigate the early growth characteristics of Holsteins on Karacabey State Farm. The material of this study consisted of 307 calves descended from 30 heifers imported from the U.S.A.

The average birth weights of male and female calves were estimated to be 36.4 and 33.4 kg., respectively. Birth weight was highly significantly affected by sex of calf, age of dam, bull and year. However due to insufficient number of bulls and calves the year effects partly reflected the effects of bulls. The six month body weights of male and female calves were equal and estimated to be 141 kg.

It is concluded that birth and six months weight of Holsteins on Karacabey State Farm may be considered sufficient at the time being and may indicate that Marmara region provides favorable conditions for Holstein breeding. Keywords :
