An investigation about estrus synchronization and rate of twining in ewes treated with progesterone and pregnant mare serum

Adnan ÖZKOCA

- An investigation was made to study estrus synchronisation and rate of twinning in ewes treated with progesterone and pregnant mare serum (PMS). 49 ewes in Hormone group received 15 mgr. Daily progesterone injection intramuscularly for 5 successive days; on the sixth day they were given an intramuscular injection of 500 I.U. PMS. 55 similar ewes were used as controls. Feeding conditions were poor and typical of Central Anatolian plateau.

Within 9 days of last injection, 95.9 percent of the ewes in hormone group showed estrus as compared to 50.9 percent in Control group during the same period. Lambing percentages to the first insemination were 74.5 and 83.0 percent in hormone and control groups respectively, percentages to twin births being 22.85 and 30.76 percent in the same order. PMS did not increase rate of twinning under existing conditions. Keywords :
